Library's Phased Reopening Begins June 1

75 days! After having to close the library for 75 days, we are excited to announce that we will begin reopening our doors to the public on June 1. We are committed to providing as safe an environment as possible for you and our staff when you return to the library. Therefore, we will be opening the library in phases, offering limited access to resources and materials at first and implementing additional safety procedures. We will continually review our safety and operating procedures, make adjustments as needed, and expand access as we are able.

Library Hours: Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm

Library Street Entrance: You will enter and exit through the Library Street entrance, unless you are notified otherwise for specific activities or programs.

Appointments: We will be limiting the number of people in the building at any given time by scheduling appointments for library use. You may schedule a 45-minute appointment to locate and check out library materials, make copies, use one of the computers, or use The Workshop. One appointment may be made per person per day, and families are encouraged to send only one family member at a time. A child may be accompanied by an adult. You will be asked to leave the building after 45 minutes, at which time staff will sanitize computers and other high-contact surfaces.

Safety Measures: For your safety and that of our staff, all staff members will wear masks and sanitize their hands and work surfaces frequently. You will be offered hand sanitizer when you enter the library, and we will appreciate it greatly if you also wear a mask. We will have disposable masks available, as well as plastic gloves if you choose to browse through our books and other materials. All library materials will continue to be quarantined for at least 72 hours before they are returned to the shelves.

Programs - Online & In-Person: We will continue to offer most of our programs online for the time being. Many of our programs have moved to Facebook, Instagram, Zoom, and email. Curbside Pickup

Curbside & Online Services Continue: As we begin to reopen the library, we will continue to offer services and programs developed during our closure. We are pleased to announce that curbside pickup is available. We will be adjusting hours and procedures as needed to meet the needs of our community and ensure the safety of our staff and patrons. Curbside Pickup Process Overview

Requesting DAPL materials: Only DeForest Library materials are available for check out at this time. Please use LINKcat to place your holds when possible, but please feel free to contact library staff during business hours if you need additional assistance. You will be notified when your holds are available, at which time you can schedule your curbside or electronic locker pickup. Materials requested from other libraries are not available at this time.

Grab bags: We’re happy to choose fresh reading and viewing materials just for you! Go to, complete the Grab Bag form, including your preferred format, theme, and pickup day and time, and we’ll get right to work.

Safety precautions: Library staff is taking additional safety precautions as it continues to serve the community. In accordance with best practices for handling library materials, we are quarantining returned items for a minimum of 72 hours to reduce the risk of passing along COVID-19 and other viruses. Patrons are encouraged to help stop the spread by washing hands before and after using public library materials and perhaps even sanitizing the materials before use.

Curbside pickup hours: 9:30 am to 5:15 pm, Monday through Saturday. Schedule curbside pickup by emailing or by calling 608-846-5482. Materials will be placed outside the Library Street entrance at your scheduled time.

Outside electronic lockers: A limited number of small electronic lockers are available for picking up materials outside of curbside pickup hours. Materials must be picked up within 24 hours of your requested time. Email or call 608-846-5482 to make pickup arrangements.

General Information

Due dates: Due dates for all materials checked out before April 24 have been extended to June 1, 2020. Materials checked out on or after April 24 will be due June 1 or the normal due date, whichever is later. Please log into your LINKcat account to verify your due dates. We will post updates as they are available.

Returns: DeForest Library materials may be returned at any time using the outdoor book returns. Large items, such as busy bags, bags of books, Launchpads, may be returned in the Library Street lobby during business hours. We encourage you to return your materials when you are finished with them so they may be made available for your neighbors. Your materials will be quarantined within the library for at least three (3) days after you return them; the materials will still be checked out to you during this period but will not accrue fines.

Donations: Until further notice we are no longer accepting donations of materials. At the moment our book sale is fully stocked and we cannot store any more materials that are donated. We will begin accepting donations after our next book sale. 

Public wifi: The library’s public wifi is accessible outside the building. The signal is strongest on the Library Street side, near the Children’s Room.

Free online services and resources: The library offers a variety of online services and resources for free at For example, patrons can use their library card and pin numbers to download ebooks and audiobooks through Overdrive and Libby and stream videos and TV shows through Kanopy and Kanopy Kids. The website also features a page of resources specific to the COVID-19 pandemic, including information about unemployment and financial resources.
