DeForest Area Public Library Borrowing Rules

Library Cards

Residents of the Village of DeForest may apply for a library card free of charge. Non-residents may fill out a library card application that will be sent to their appropriate home library or county resource library. Dane County residents will be issued a Dane County library card supplied by the Dane County Library Service. Library cards issued by other cities and village in the South Central Library System and by other library systems with which South Central has contracts will be honored at the DeForest Area Public Library.

Proper identification must be presented in order to verify the residential address of the patron. Identification may include: driver’s license, utility bill, mortgage papers, state identification card, etc.

Parental signature and identification is required for minors.

If you lose your card, you will have to pay $1.00 for a replacement card and fill out a new application. We strongly urge you to carry your card with you at all times and report a lost or stolen card to the library immediately. Items cannot be checked out without a library card. These measures are taken to protect you from being held responsible for items that you did not borrow.

You are responsible for any materials checked out on your library card. If the card is loaned to another person, you are still responsible for any fines or lost materials that may accumulate on that card.

Periodic patron information checks are requested at the point of checkout. You will be informed at checkout if you have any holds, fines and/or overdue materials.

DVDs, Blu-rays, and compact discs (CDs) may be checked out by any patron with a valid library card. “R” rated movies may be checked out by patrons 17 years of age or older. Identification showing age may be requested when checking out these materials.

Equipment may only be checked out by an adult. A patron checking out equipment may be required to complete a contract, provide valid identification and a library card in good standing.

Fines

A fine of ten cents per day is charged on all library materials except as follows: $1.00 per day is charged for rentals, cake pans, and Playaway Views. Kits such as Busy Bags, Bags of Books, & Back Packs are charged 50 cents per day (per kit, not per barcode). $3.00 per day is charged for equipment that requires a contract. These rates apply to children as well as adults. Fines are not levied for holidays or any day the library is closed.

Overdue Notices

Library users are responsible for keeping track of the materials checked out on their library card. However, as a courtesy, the library may call to remind you if you’re not signed up for email notices when your materials are overdue. Phone calls are courtesy reminders to users and in no case will a reduction in fines or fees be made because you were not notified.

Loss of Borrowing Privileges

When library materials have been overdue for a month, the materials are then considered lost and you will be responsible for the replacement cost of the item. The Deforest Area Public Library does not accept replacement copies of lost materials. When the amount of fines and lost materials exceeds $10.00, the card may no longer be used until the fines and/or fees are paid and/or materials are returned.
